It's not often that Manish Patel—golf zealot, speakeasy proprietor, and FitJoy's very own CEO—can be found sitting down. Instead, he's usually zipping around, checking in on projects, bouncing ideas off us, taking calls, or meeting with other movers and shakers over lattes at the coffee shop downstairs.
We're not sure he even needs coffee, with his naturally caffeinated spirit, but then again, he's also the father to a four-month-old now, so it's entirely possible.
Like we said, Manish is rarely the type you'll find in a chair. But today, we launched the first-ever commercially-available grain-free pretzels. (Yes, that's pretzels, made without any grains!) They're also the first salty snack we have ever added to our line of grain-free protein bars, so um, they're kind of a big deal!
So today, Manish sat down with us to answer some of the questions we've gotten about our new pretzels.
Q: Why did FitJoy decide to make pretzels?
Manish: We saw a great opportunity to provide real innovation in the pretzel category. The chip aisle has been getting all the attention and the "better for you" pretzels just were not clean enough, or they just didn't have the taste profile to really match an existing pretzel. We wanted to change that and give our consumers a great tasting, better-for-you option.
Q: Why eat a grain-free pretzel as opposed to a normal pretzel or gluten-free pretzel?
Manish: A lot of people are avoiding grains for health or dietary reasons. It's absolutely one of the biggest current trends, and it's only growing, but there's still a huge lag in products supporting that trend. For many these days, gluten-free foods don't go far enough in reducing inflammation. We wanted to create an option for everyone that would be not only gluten-free, but also free from junky corn products like corn starch, corn syrup, maltodextrin, and other grains like rice.
Q: Do grain-free pretzels taste different?
Manish: They taste pretty damn close to the unhealthy ones we all love. It took us a year to get it right.
Q: What’s next: more salty snacks, or more bar flavors?
Manish: A lot more of everything. We are very busy over here.
