5 Ways to Tame Your Toddler Office Mate

Working from home is tough. I often find myself wondering, "Am I working hard enough?" or "Am I being the most productive & efficient with my time." Ugh, what unfair questions. They’re unfair because we're being asked to work in an environment that is not built for working being productive - especially if you have a toddler & a newborn in the house like we do.

But, not all is lost, there are ways to shake that annoying question, do amazing work & feel happy at the end of the day. Here are my top five tips on Taming your Toddler Office Mate.

1. Baby Wearing is soooo in.

Newborns require a lot of sleep in the day. As a parent, you want to keep tabs on ‘em while you're working...while also preventing your toddler from climbing on the kitchen table. So, I wear the baby for the majority of the day so she can sleep soundly & I can be flexible to quickly support chaos resolution if needed. Also, there's something really joyful, fulfilling & motivating about wearing a sleeping baby.  Here’s my preferred baby wearer.

2. Honesty is the Best Policy

Speaking of chaos. If you have a toddler in the home, you know that things can go nuts at any moment. So, if I'm jumping on the phone with someone for the first time, I always start by letting them know I have a toddler & newborn in the home. Not only does it alleviate the pressure in the house to keep things quiet, but it also adds a bit of humanity to the call. Humanity is a trait we really value at FitJoy.

3. Keep Snacks Handy

Other things we really value at FitJoy are amazing tasting snacks. Thank God, because no one loves snacks more than toddlers.  Snack time is anytime in this house. So, I always keep a bag of our Grain-Free Gluten Free Pretzels on hand & usually pair with dried fruit & sesame seed butter. This creates a super engaging snack for her to experiment with, keeping her busy for a good 20 minutes.

4. Engage the Kids During Breaks

When I take a break, I often catch myself wanting to pick up a little bit or get a snack myself. When that happens, I make our toddler part of the process. We have a stool that she uses to help prepare snacks & wash dishes. It's a really great way to bond with her, get a break in at the same time & start teaching her to how to be part of our home’s rhythm.

5. Release Expectations But Maintain Routine

Sleep at night is tough with a newborn - but I do my best to start my day before anyone in the house is fully up. That means I'm usually up by 5:30am, doing some quick yoga, meditation and then journaling alongside a strong cup of coffee. This gives me the “me-time” needed to fill myself up for the rest of the day. But, I also acknowledge that this routine can easily be disrupted & so, if that cup of coffee is the only thing I do for myself in the morning, I soak up as much gratitude in that moment.

Looking for easy snacks to help make working from home easier? Try our Himalayan Pink Salt Pretzels with your favorite hummus or guacamole for a satisfying, healthy snack. Or if you want a taste of something sweet and tangy, try our Honey Mustard Pretzels. Not only are they free of added sugars, they are also made with cassava and chickpea flours, so they make great gluten-free snacks for our GF friends out there too!
